Design and Technology

Key Stage 3 Curriculum Content

All students in Design & Technology follow a carousel model throughout Year 7, 8 and 9. They rotate across 5 different projects each year and gain valuable experience in each of the 5 discrete areas that provide key skills necessary in all aspects of Design & Technology.

The 5 key areas are:

• Product Design

• Food

• Electronics

• Textiles

• Graphics – CAD/CAM.

Students will learn through making, and will complete projects in school which they can then take home. Practical work is also supported through written work.

Where students choose to progress to the GCSE course they will sit sections of the AQA exams.

Key Stage 4 Curriculum Content

Students can choose from two GCSE courses:

1. Product Design

2. Food Technology

Both courses follow the AQA specification and work to the same grading framework:

• Investigating the design context

• Development of designs (including modelling)

• Making

• Testing and evaluation

• Communication

The courses are assessed through a mixture of coursework (60% of grade) and exams (40% of grade).
